Filters, Belts & Hoses
A number of other parts responsible for transmitting force, torque
and motion to other components of your motor vehicle are also subject
to wear and tear. These are the fan belts and timing belts. These are
the reinforced rubber loops attached to a system of pulleys that activate
fans, air conditioning compressors and the car’s alternator. The
timing belts are those attached to the drive train and serve to synchronize
the spark plugs with the piston upstrokes. Any visible fraying or obvious
damage to these belts indicates a need for replacement. Installation
of these parts is a bit tricky so unless you know what you are doing,
the services of a certified mechanic are warranted in this case.
The liquid engine cooling system consists of a network of plumbing
and a heat exchanger or radiator system. Rubber hoses take up the job
of connecting all these important parts. But since they operate in conditions
of high heat and tremendous pressure, these hoses are bound to blow
a leak at some point in time. A sudden rise in temperature indicated
on your dashboard instrument panel, not to mention the clouds of steam
billowing out of your bonnet, and the annoying hiss accompanying it
would all point to a radiator hose that needs replacement.
Other hoses you should keep an eye on are those that connect the hydraulic
system and the brake system. These must be replaced before they burst
when visible damage is apparent. If a hose bursts, its immediate replacement,
and refilling of the fluid it transmits is needed.
