The Registration Marks

Seven characters make up the registration mark. There characters are divided into three groups carrying different meanings:

  • The first two letters show the local memory tag indicating where the vehicle was registered. The first letter of the local memory tag represents the region while the second letter represents the local DVLA Office.
  • The next two numbers are the age identifier, indicating the age of the vehicle
  • The lat three letters are chosen at random, giving the vehicle its unique identity. The letters I and Q are not included since it is considered offensive.

Registration sequences not issued or certified by the DVLA are considered illegal plates.

This new format was introduced in September 1, 2001.
