The Process

Buying a personalized registration number is equal to buying the rights to display the registration of the vehicle. VAT is charged to the owner/driver with the corresponding government transfer fees.
To buy a registration number to directly go into a vehicle, these are required from the vehicle owner:
- V5
- MOT if applicable
- a copy of your tax disc
- or a note of your current tax expiry date.
Transferring of registration is done by obtaining a form (V317) from the local DVLA office. This is also called The Cherished Transfer Scheme. Form V778/1, also obtained at the same office, contains information on how to place the registration number on hold. This retention is valid for 12 months.
The DVLA will send to the owner a Certificate of Entitlement (V750) and this must be kept safe since this is the form the owner will need once the number plates are ready to be marked on the car.
